One of a kind vintage folk art panda by David Alvarez. All hand carved cotton wood with plastic “PVC” pieces for claws. The piece was made in 1984, by this time David was no longer working under the master Felipe Archuleta. David an Oakland California native moved east to Santa Fe in search of work and his friend Alonzo Jimenez. Jimenez was another famous Santa Fe folk artist that assured David of a better life if he came to the land of enchantment, and perhaps a chance to stay out of trouble. Several months passed and Alvarez was unable to find the elusive Alonzo in Santa Fe. One day hitch hiking out of town a truck stopped to pick David up off the side of the road. In the truck sat Alonzo Jimenez and more importantly folk carving master Felipe Archuleta. David was greatly influenced by Felipe and his work still reflects his time spent with Archuleta in the 1970’s. David’s work can be found in top collections and museums around the country.
